About Simerjot K. Jassal, MD

Simerjot K. Jassal, MD, is a primary care physician who provides services for a wide range of health issues including hypertension, diabetes, infection, liver and lung disease, and cancer. She personally cares for continuity patients and oversees medical residents who deliver services to women veterans at VA San Diego Healthcare System, and serves as an inpatient ward attending at both VA San Diego and UC San Diego Medical Center. At this time, patients cannot schedule an appointment with Dr. Jassal as she is a hospital medicine attending physician only.

Dr. Jassal's research interests include chronic kidney disease and medical care for the elderly. Presently, she is a collaborator on the largest open consortium in kidney disease research that is analyzing data from over two million people across 40 countries. She is also the co-investigator of The Rancho Bernardo study, a 40-year analysis of the differences in men and women in heart disease and diabetes. Dr. Jassal's research has been featured in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including American Journal of Cardiology, The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, British Medical Journal, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and JAMA. She serves as ad-hoc reviewer for various publications such as American Journal of Epidemiology and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

As director of the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, Dr. Jassal oversees 101 internal medicine residents, as well as chief medical residents, inpatient rotations, continuity clinics, outpatient primary care, and clinical and subspecialty rotations at locations including Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, VA San Diego, and the Hillcrest and La Jolla campuses.

Dr. Jassal has presented nationally and internationally on topics such as chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease in women. She has won numerous awards over the years, including Teacher of the Year from the American College of Physicians Southern California Region Chapter III, and Spirit of Planetree Physician Champion of the Year from the VA San Diego Healthcare System. The San Diego County Medical Society has consistently named Dr. Jassal a San Diego " Top Doctor" every year since 2009.

Dr. Jassal completed residency training in internal medicine and was chief resident at UCLA Medical Center. She received her medical degree from UCSF School of Medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine.

Dr. Jassal is a member of several professional organizations and committees including the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, Society of General Internal Medicine, and American College of Physicians.
