Terry A. Schwartz, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in caring for individuals with eating disorders, mood disorders and anxiety disorders. She has more than 20 years' experience and has particular expertise in treating individuals who have an eating disorder co-occurring with mood, anxiety or substance abuse disorders.
Dr. Schwartz is the clinical director of UC San Diego Health's Eating Disorders Treatment and Research Program, which uses an intensive and innovative, evidence-based approach that addresses each person's medical, psychological and psycho-educational health. The program also offers family counseling to help patients and their families with improved understanding, communication, and capacity for supporting each other.
As an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Schwartz instructs psychiatry residents, social work trainees, psychology interns and postdoctoral researchers at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research has focused on identifying and improving psychopharmacological interventions for eating disorders and related complex mental health issues.
From 1997 through 2005, Dr. Schwartz served as associate medical director of Outpatient Psychiatric Services and medical director for the Co-Occurring Disorders Program at UC San Diego Health. She is also the past chair of San Diego County's Mental Health "Psychopharmacology of Co-Occurring Disorders" Committee.
Dr. Schwartz completed a residency in psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where she also earned her medical degree. She is board-certified in psychiatry.
Dr. Schwartz has been named a top doctor in San Diego Magazine's "Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society.
