About Kevin Messey, MS, ATC
Kevin Messey, MS, is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) who specializes in sports medicine, biomechanical evaluation, and rehabilitation. He has additional certifications as a corrective exercise specialist (CES) and a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS).
Messey is passionate about helping athletes return to activity pain-free and enjoys the ability to provide customized care to each of his patients. His approach to care emphasizes unique techniques for injury prevention and recovery, including static and functional postural assessment; thorough orthopedic evaluation; the Graston Technique; muscle energy techniques; mobilizations; proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching; corrective exercise; and Kinesio taping and other corrective taping techniques.
Messey has worked with local personal training teams and individuals of all ages, sports and skill levels, including high school, college, professional, and Olympic athletes. He believes in a progressive approach to sports injury rehabilitation and recovery and has particular expertise treating injuries related to surfing, basketball, volleyball, water polo, baseball, football, and many other sports.
Before joining UC San Diego Health in 2013, Mr. Messey was the head athletic trainer at UC San Diego Athletics for seven years. He was also an athletic trainer at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center from 2001 - 2002, where he worked with Olympic-level athletes in soccer, archery, bobsled, canoe, cycling, field hockey, kayak, rowing, rugby, softball, track and field, and triathlon. Messey has also worked with the San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants.
He earned his master's degree in sports health care and athletic training from A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Health Sciences.
