About Jerry J. Shih, MD

Jerry Shih, MD, is a board-certified neurologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating people with epilepsy. He directs UC San Diego Health's Level 4 Epilepsy Center, which provides the highest level of care to people with epilepsy and other seizure disorders, and is the only nationally designated epilepsy center in the region. The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program offers state-of-the-art neurodiagnostic monitoring and neuroimaging for diagnosing complex epilepsy conditions, and advanced medical and surgical treatment options. Dr. Shih's expertise also includes managing the care of patients with refractory epilepsy, or seizures that are not controlled with medications.

As a professor in the Department of Neurosciences, Dr. Shih instructs medical students, residents, and fellows. His research focuses on brain-computer interfaces, diagnostic utility of magnetoencephalography for epilepsy, and medical and surgical treatments of drug-resistant epilepsy.

Dr. Shih is extensively published and has co-authored numerous book chapters and abstracts, and over 60 peer-reviewed articles. His work has appeared in journals such as The Journal of the American Medical Association, Nature, and Annals of Neurology among others. He also serves as a reviewer for several medical journals and lectures frequently at national medical conferences.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Shih was director of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in Jacksonville, Florida. He was also an associate professor of in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

He completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and critical care neurology at UC Los Angeles School of Medicine, where he also completed a residency in neurology and earned his medical degree. He is board certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy.

Dr. Shih is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association, a board of director's member for the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, and co-chair of the American Epilepsy Society's Annual Symposium on Epilepsy Therapies.

Outside of work, Dr. Shih enjoys staying active through tennis and swimming.
