About John P. Shen, MD

John Shen, MD, is a board-certified medical oncologist who specializes in treating gastrointestinal cancers. This includes cancers of the esophagus, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, colon and appendix. He uses numerous forms of therapy including traditional chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy to offer the best possible treatment options for his patients.

Dr. Shen is part of the gastrointestinal cancer unit at UC San Diego Health's Moore's Cancer Center, where he works alongside a multidisciplinary team to provide patients with highly specialized care.

As a physician-scientist, Dr. Shen's background is in chemical biology and cancer genomics. His research focuses on applying both experimental and computational systems biology techniques, in particular genetic interaction networks, to investigate cancer biology. With this work, Dr. Shen aims to translate new knowledge of cancer cells into improved outcomes in clinical oncology. In particular, he has identified new networks of synthetic lethal interactions and is demonstrating that these networks can be used to identify the specific drug that is most likely to be effective for an individual tumor. His research has been funded by the National Institute of Health, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer; and has been published in journals such as Cancer Research and Molecular Cell.

In addition to teaching medical students, residents and fellows in gastrointestinal oncology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Shen also lectures on cancer genomics at national and international medical conferences. His work on synthetic lethal networks was also highlighted at the American Association for Cancer Research 2016 Annual Meeting, where he was selected as one of three NextGen Stars.

Dr. Shen completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine and went on to complete a research fellowship sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. He is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology.

He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology.

Outside of work, Dr. Shen enjoys playing rugby with the Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club, sailing, and surfing.
