About Alexander Norbash, MD
Alexander Norbash, MD, is an interventional neuroradiologist who specializes in endovascular neurosurgical techniques to prevent strokes and restore normal blood flow in the neck and brain.
His clinical practice focuses on treating cerebral (brain) aneurysms, defects in the brain's vascular system known as arteriovenous malformations, and carotid and cerebrovascular stenosis (narrowing of the vessels).
A professor in the Department of Radiology, he was among the first to develop and describe the technique of stenting of the carotid and intracranial arteries as a treatment option for endovascular disease.
He has been active in developing novel materials and devices to advance endovascular surgery, such as ultrathin stents, re-absorbable stents, and injectable compounds to stop bleeding from vessels. He also has an interest in robotics and endovascular and interventional simulation systems.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 2015, Dr. Norbash was radiologist-in-chief at Boston Medical Center and chair and professor of the Department of Radiology at Boston University School of Medicine. He is a former associate professor of the Department of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. He also directed the diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology services at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and founded its interventional neuroradiology and endovascular neurosurgical services.
Dr. Norbash completed fellowships in diagnostic neuroradiology and interventional neuroradiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed residencies in radiology at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Saint Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh, now a part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He earned a medical degree from University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine and master's degree in science in healthcare management from Harvard University School of Public Health. He is board certified in radiology and neuroradiology.
