About Sierra Washington, MD, FACOG
Sierra Washington, MD, is an obstetrician and gynecologist who provides comprehensive obstetrics and gynecologic care at UC San Diego Health. Dr. Washington sees patients at the Hillcrest campus for prenatal care and family planning services and gynecologic problems. She aims to provide a holistic approach to patient care and natural birthing experience for parents and their newborns within Hillcrest and Jacobs Medical Center's state-of-the-art obstetrical environment.
At UC San Diego School of Medicine, she is an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, where she instructs OB/GYN residents in the areas of contraception and abortion. She also teaches and supervises residents in the inpatient setting.
Dr. Washington has published numerous articles and her work has appeared in International Journal of Gynecology Obstetrics and Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, among others. She has spoken regionally, nationally and internationally on a range of topics, including HIV and pregnancy and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV in the U.S. and abroad.
Her experience also includes working as a physician in sub-Saharan Africa, where she helped fight the HIV epidemic. She has worked for many years at the intersection of HIV and reproductive health in countries such as Zambia, Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
Dr. Washington completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, where she also served as chief resident. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and holds a Master of Science in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG).
Outside of work, Dr. Washington enjoys music and dancing. She speaks fluent French and Spanish and is conversant in Swahili and Portuguese.
