Sarah H. Averbach, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist who provides comprehensive gynecological care and specializes in family planning. Her expertise includes surgical management of gynecologic conditions and reproductive infectious disease.
As an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, Dr. Averbach instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research interests include safety and use of postpartum contraception, and expanding access to contraception and abortion globally. Her work has been published in The Lancet HIV, AIDs, The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Contraception.
She completed a family planning fellowship at UC San Francisco School of Medicine and her residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard University, in Boston. She earned her medical degree from UC San Francisco School of Medicine, where she also earned a master's degree (MAS) in clinical research. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Averbach is a member of the Society of Family Planning, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.
Outside of work, Dr. Averbach enjoys yoga and travel. She has provided reproductive health care to women in Uganda and Zimbabwe, as well as disaster relief care in Nepal and Indonesia. She is conversant in Nepali.
