About Jyoti S. Mayadev, MD
Jyoti Mayadev, MD, is a board-certified radiation oncologist who specializes in treating gynecologic and breast cancers. Her expertise includes intensity modulated external beam radiation, image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and image-guided brachytherapy (IGBT), an advanced cancer treatment where a radioactive implant is placed inside or very close to a tumor.
Dr. Mayadev also manages the care and treatment of cancer patients and works closely with other doctors, including medical, gynecological and surgical oncologists to provide comprehensive care. She is very interested in patient reported outcomes, and fostering an optimal patient experience during radiation therapy and brachytherapy.
As an associate professor and the medical director of gynecologic brachytherapy in the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences, Dr. Mayadev instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She is currently the lead investigator on a study that examines the role of immunotherapy in cervical cancer.
Dr. Mayadev is the editor-in-chief and founder of the Image Guided Brachytherapy Handbook and her work has been published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, Brachytherapy, Practical Radiation Oncology, and Clinical Breast Cancer, among others.
She has been invited to share her brachytherapy expertise at many conferences and meetings, including the American Brachytherapy Society and the American Society for Radiation Oncology. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Mayadev served as the brachytherapy director in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UC Davis Medical Center, where she founded and developed their image-guided brachytherapy programs, performed thousands of brachytherapy treatments and instructed medical students, residents and fellows.
She has received awards for her teaching and clinical expertise, including "Educator of the Year," and the "Dean's Award for Gynecologic Interstitial Brachytherapy".
Dr. Mayadev was chief resident during her radiation oncology residency at University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. She completed an internship in internal medicine at Providence Portland Medical Center and earned her medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. She is board certified in radiation oncology.
Dr. Mayadev is active in several professional societies including the American Brachytherapy Society, Gynecologic Oncology Group, the Western Association of Gynecologic Oncologists, and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology. She holds leadership roles with the national cooperative group for oncology, NRG Oncology, where she serves as co-chair of the phase I committee, and a core member of the developmental therapeutics and cervical committees.
Outside of work, Dr. Mayadev enjoys swimming, biking, hiking, yoga, vegetarian cooking, being in nature, and caring for the environment.
