Laith Alshawabkeh MD, is a board-certified cardiologist who specializes in caring for adults with congenital heart disease, an abnormality in the heart that is present at birth. He leads the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at UC San Diego Health, the first and only program in San Diego to earn accreditation from the Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA) as a comprehensive care center.
An associate professor in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Alshawabkeh is the lead investigator on multiple studies that impact the care of adults with congenital heart disease. His work has been featured in top medical journals, including JAMA, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Journal of the American Heart Association.
Dr. Alshawabkeh completed advanced training at the Boston Adult Congenital Heart Program, a joint program between Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where he served as co-chair of FIT American College of Cardiology Adult Congenital Heart Disease Working Group.
He completed his fellowship in cardiology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, where he also served as the chief fellow. He did his residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Alshawabkeh earned his medical degree from University of Cairo School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and adult congenital heart disease.
