Gabriel T. Schnickel, MD, MPH, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in liver, kidney and pancreas transplant. His expertise includes treating liver cancer, bile duct cancer, liver cysts, and benign tumors of the liver.
As an associate professor in the Department of Surgery, Dr. Schnickel instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research interests include factors influencing patient and graft survival following liver transplant; socioeconomic factors and impact on liver cancer diagnosis; and treatment and access to transplant.
He has co-authored numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and his work has appeared in journals such as Liver Transplantation, Transplantation and Transplantation International, among others.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Schnickel was a surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida. He completed a fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery and a residency in general surgery at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Dr. Schnickel earned his medical degree from University of Colorado School of Medicine. He holds a master's degree in public health from University of Michigan School of Public Health. He is board certified in general surgery.
Dr. Schnickel is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.
Outside of work. Dr. Schnickel enjoys cycling, skiing and spending time with his family.
