About Praveen Akuthota, MD
Praveen Akuthota, MD, is a board-certified pulmonologist who treats all types of asthma as well as eosinophilic pulmonary disease, including eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Churg-Strauss syndrome), allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, and eosinophilic pneumonia. Eosinophilic lung disorders involve an increased number of eosinophils (white blood cells) in the lungs. These white blood cells are part of the immune system and fight off allergic or chemical reactions and some infections.
In addition, Dr. Akuthota cares for patients in the hospital who need medical critical care and pulmonary consultation.
As an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Akuthota trains medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He conducts research on eosinophilic disease, which includes clinical trials. He also studies asthma and is a member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Precision Interventions for Severe and/or Exacerbation Prone Asthma (PrecISE) Network, for which he received an NIH grant. His research has been published in several leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Akuthota completed a fellowship in pulmonary critical care at Harvard Medical School and did his residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, where he was chief resident. He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. He is board certified in critical care medicine, pulmonary disease and internal medicine.
Dr. Akuthota is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the International Eosinophil Society (serving on the board of directors), and the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology.
