About Murray B. Stein, MD, MPH

Murray B. Stein, MD, MPH, is a board-certified psychiatrist who treats individuals with anxiety, and trauma and stressor-related disorders, including panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with or without depression.

He is an expert in diagnosing anxiety disorders and helping patients find the most effective medications for their conditions. He is also familiar with psychological therapies for anxiety disorders and often works in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapists to optimize care.

As vice chair for clinical research in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Stein's research focuses on epidemiology, neurobiology, and the treatment of anxiety and traumatic stress disorders. Some of his recent projects have investigated interventions for treating anxiety disorders at the primary care level, medications for treatment-resistant anxiety disorders, and functional neuroimaging to better understand anxiety and trauma-related disorders. He has studied risk factors for suicide, PTSD and other mental health disorders affecting veterans. He has authored or co-authored more than 600 peer-reviewed scientific articles on these and other topics.

Dr. Stein completed a medical staff fellowship in anxiety and affective disorders at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Md. He also completed residency training in psychiatry at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine and the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine and holds a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Stein is board certified in psychiatry.
