About Julie R. Sierra, MD
Julie Sierra, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine doctor. She provides primary care for adults, including preventive care and diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. Dr. Sierra treats individuals from their late teens (age 18 and older) to older adults, and her clinical interests include (but are not limited to) women's health, disease prevention and screening, and chronic disease management. She also manages the care of people with multiple medical problems ranging from diabetes and hypertension, to thyroid disease, heart conditions, and many others.
As a primary care physician at an academic medical center, Dr. Sierra supervises and teaches medical students and residents. Her research interests include the care of underserved populations.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Sierra was an internal medicine doctor and the clinic medical director at San Ysidro Health Center in California. In addition, she was an internal medicine doctor at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Honolulu and an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
Dr. Sierra completed her residency training at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in Evanston (now NorthShore University HealthSystem), Ill, where she was chief resident. She earned her medical degree at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She is board certified in internal medicine.
Dr. Sierra has supplied medical care to underserved populations around the world, including El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Cuba.
Outside of work, Dr. Sierra stays active through yoga and swimming. She enjoys international travel, social justice, immigrant rights, political activism and dog rescue.
