About Erika M. Zettner, PhD
Erika Zettner, PhD, is a certified audiologist (CCC-A) who specializes in hearing assessments, hearing aid fitting, evoked potential testing, and cochlear implant assessments, mapping and programming.
As co-director for the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Audiology, Dr. Zettner provides clinical supervision and research field instruction for audiology students. She is a professor in the Division of Otolaryngology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where her research focuses on hearing disorders, cochlear implants, and evoked potentials. She is also evaluating a diagnostic device for auditory evoked response based objective tinnitus.
Her research in otoacoustic emissions, hearing loss and listening devices has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals, including International Journal of Audiology, Ear and Hearing and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She also serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous medical journals.
Dr. Zettner has won several awards and honors, including Honorary Member for teaching from the Golden Key International Honour Society, and the Institutional National Research Service Award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. Over the years she has been invited to speak at national conferences on topics such as tinnitus treatment, clinical implications for otoacoustic emissions, cochlear implants, and universal newborn hearing screening ototoxic monitoring in patients with cystic fibrosis, and community lectures on hearing aid and cochlear implants.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Zettner was assistant professor in audiology at Ohio University.
She earned a doctoral degree in audiology from the University of Washington. She holds the Certificate in Competence in Audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Dr. Zettner is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, American Academy of Audiology, and California Academy.
In addition to English, Dr. Zettner speaks German and is conversant in Spanish.
