Thomas L. Beaumont, MD, PhD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in brain tumors and skull base surgery. He performs both open microsurgery and minimally invasive approaches for intrinsic tumors, as well as pituitary and skull base tumors.
Dr. Beaumont has a passion for the treatment of anterior skull base pathology including pituitary tumors, craniopharyngiomas, clival chordoma and sinonasal malignancies, and he is an expert in the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA). He also treats primary malignant brain tumors such as gliomas involving language and motor areas using awake surgery, stimulation mapping and augmented reality with high-resolution diffusion tensor tractography.
Trained as a scientist, Dr. Beaumont has extensive research experience in genomics and epigenetics and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine and currently studies the role of chromatin remodeling in tumorigenesis with the goal of developing novel targeted therapeutics for brain and skull base tumors. He also conducts clinical outcomes studies and has developed risk prediction models for rare clinical diseases.
Dr. Beaumont completed a fellowship in skull base and minimally invasive cranial surgery at The Ohio State University. He completed a residency in neurological surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Beaumont earned both his medical and doctoral degrees in an NIH-funded combined program at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
He is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Skull Base Society and the Society for Neuro-Oncology.
Outside of work, Dr. Beaumont enjoys cycling, sailing, tennis and spending time with his family.
