Alejandro Meruelo, MD, PhD

Alejandro Meruelo, MD, PhD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who delivers compassionate, expert care to people with bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. He also cares for individuals with treatment-resistant depression using transcranial magnetic stimulation.
His research examines the interrelationship between mood and substance use disorders, using neuroimaging, statistical and computational methods.
As an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Meruelo is involved in training medical students, resident and fellows in psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 2019, Dr. Meruelo was a fellow in biological psychiatry research at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He completed residency training in psychiatry research at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree and doctorate in molecular and structural biology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Meruelo is board certified in psychiatry.
He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association.
