Shirin Alonzo, MD, MPH, is board-certified pediatrician who provides primary care for infants, children, and adolescents through all of their developmental stages. She has a special interest in caring for children who have medically fragile or special needs.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Alonzo practiced throughout several community clinics in San Diego County. Her experience also includes serving as a volunteer physician in Mexico and mentoring medical students interested in caring for the international community. She has conducted public health research on cancer disparities, longevity and maternal mortality. Dr. Alonzo has won numerous awards recognizing her clinical and teaching excellence, including the Rady Children's Hospital CARES award in 2014 and the American Academy of Pediatrics Medical Student Teaching award in 2013.
She completed fellowship training in medical neurodevelopmental disabilities at UC San Diego School of Medicine/Rady Children's Hospital. She completed residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from UC San Diego School of Medicine and her master's in public health from Harvard University School of Public Health. She is board certified in general pediatrics and internal medicine.
Outside of work, Dr. Alonzo enjoys traveling around the world, surfing, hiking and playing basketball. In addition to English, she is fluent in conversational Farsi and medical Spanish.
