Pranab Barman, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist who specializes in liver disease (hepatology) and transplantation. He treats patients with liver cancer, cirrhosis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and hepatitis. Dr. Barman's expertise is in transplant hepatology, caring for patients both before and after transplantation.
As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Barman trains residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research interests include disparities in access to hepatology care and post-transplant outcomes. Dr. Barman has authored book chapters on the long term care of liver transplant recipients.
He completed fellowship training in transplant hepatology at Duke University School of Medicine in North Carolina. In addition, Dr. Barman did a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Barman did his residency in internal medicine and served as chief resident at University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He earned his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.
He is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the International Liver Transplantation Society, and the American Society of Transplantation where he serves on the Education Subcommittee of Liver and Intestinal Community of Practice.
In his free time, Dr. Barman enjoys all sports (especially Bay Area teams), plays golf and is a self-proclaimed foodie who likes traveling the world. He speaks Hindi and Spanish.
