About Suzanne Sharpton ,MD

Suzanne Sharpton, MD, MAS, is a general and transplant hepatologist with expertise in managing many types of chronic liver disease, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic hepatitis, autoimmune disorders, cirrhosis, and liver disease caused by alcohol. She works closely with members of the UC San Diego Health Liver Transplant team in order to provide care to patients in need of liver transplantation.

As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Sharpton supervises the training of residents and fellows in liver transplant medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the management of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. She has received several awards to support her research program, including support from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Dr. Sharpton completed fellowships in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). She completed a residency in internal medicine at UCSF, during which she was selected to be a chief medical resident due to her teaching and leadership skills. Dr. Sharpton earned her medical degree at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where she completed an additional year of clinical research training. She obtained a master's degree in clinical research from UCSF. Dr. Sharpton is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

She is a member of several professional societies, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Gastroenterology Association, and the American College of Gastroenterology.
