About Amy E. Liepert, MD, FACS

Amy E. Liepert, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who cares for patients that have experienced traumatic injuries, such as a fall or motor vehicle collision, as well as those requiring elective or emergency general surgery for issues such as appendicitis, gallstones, hernias, diverticulitis and acute bowel emergencies. She is the medical director of Acute Care Surgery at UC San Diego Health.

As an associate professor in the Department of Surgery, Dr. Liepert trains medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research interests include surgical education, management of severe or necrotizing pancreatitis, and surgical health policy advocacy engagement. Her work has appeared in medical and research publications, including The American Journal of Surgery, Journal of Surgical Research, Surgery, Annals of Surgery and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Liepert has presented on surgical health policy advocacy, end-of-life surgery and the effects of duplicated CT scans on trauma patients and health care costs. She has worked on an information technology tool that translates surgical research and statistical data to inform policy and regulatory bodies.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Liepert served as an assistant professor of surgery at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. While there, she was primary investigator in a multi-institutional study to identify new ways of providing support for injured trauma survivors.

Dr. Liepert completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. and her residency in general surgery at University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wis. She is board certified in surgery and surgical critical care.

She also has certifications in advanced cardiac life support and advanced trauma life support. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of several professional organizations, including the Association of Women Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Association for Surgical Education.
