Manoj Monga, MD, a board-certified urologist, is recognized as an international authority in endourology (minimally invasive urologic surgery) and kidney stone disease. His expertise includes kidney stone prevention, medical and surgical management of kidney stone disease, and endoscopic management of upper tract transitional cell cancer and benign strictures.
As chair and professor of the Department of Urology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Monga oversees the department's research, teaching and clinical care. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator for more than 45 research studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and other organizations. His research focuses on endourology and stone disease, including understanding why stones form, analyzing endourologic medical devices and therapies used in treatment options, and examining patient-centered approaches to surgical therapies for stone disease.
Dr. Monga has published over 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts - including the Journal of Endourology, Journal of Urology, Gastroenterology Research, Urology Practice and International Journal of Microbial Ecology - on topics such as ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy and shockwave lithotripsy, and dietary and medical therapy for kidney stone prevention. He has co-edited books on ureteroscopy, endourology, dietary stone prevention and percutaneous renal surgery, and has contributed chapters to more than 40 books. He has innovated and developed several medical devices, has lectured on endourology and stone disease at events around the world, and has volunteered for urology missions at hospitals in India.
Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Monga held leadership positions at Cleveland Clinic's Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute and the University of Minnesota. He also cared for patients at the Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers in La Jolla and Minneapolis. In addition, he was a visiting professor at many major medical colleges in the country. He began his career in academic medicine as an assistant professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine after his urology residency.
Dr. Monga completed a fellowship, general surgery residency and urology residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, La. He earned his medical degree from University of Health Sciences Chicago Medical School and is board certified in urology.
As secretary of the American Urological Association, he has advocated for racial and gender diversity and shared governance within the field and organization. Dr. Monga serves on the Endourology Society's board of directors and the American College of Surgeons' board of governors. He also has held leadership positions in several other professional organizations, including the Minnesota Urological Society, the Engineering and Urology Society, the Indian American Urological Association and the Research on Calculous Kinetics (ROCK) Society.
Outside of work, he enjoys hiking and all genres of saxophone music.
